Tips to Keeping Your Power Tools Rust-Free

Power tools, ranging from electric hand drill to circular saws, are a great investment for any homeowners. Whether you are accomplished at DIY projects or a novice who uses them to fix minor problems around the home, these tools can prove to be quite essential in keeping your household operational. However, to ensure that they stay functional for a significant period, these power tools require regular maintenance. This includes keeping them clean, regularly changing their batteries and more. One essential component of their maintenance is ensuring your power tools remain rust free. Corrosion does not only impede the functioning of your power tools, but could eventually lead to complete malfunction. Here are some handy tips to keeping your power tools rust free.

Store your tools in a dry environment

Most power tools will come with instructions to keep them stored in a clean, dry place. For most homeowners, this simply means keeping them in a shed away from any water. What you do not realize though that these sheds tend to be prone to humidity, especially during the warmer seasons. If you are storing your tools in your shed or garage, you need to ensure the room is properly ventilated. The first option would be to run the air conditioning in this room. However, if the shed is detached from your home, chances are this will not be possible. In this scenario, it would be best to invest in a dehumidifier. This will ensure the dampness levels in the room are kept low, hence, decreasing the chances of your power tools developing rust.

Hang the power tools on the wall

In most sheds and garages, space tends to be premium. As such, you may reason that as long as you have a dehumidifier, you can make the most of your floor space by storing your power tools on it. This is not advisable. Moisture can easily creep in from under the walls to your floors. Additionally, there is a higher risk of water damage during the wetter seasons in the event flooding occurs. To be on the safe side, it would be best to always hang your power tools on the walls. For heavier machinery, you can invest in pallets to place them atop of if you do not have adequate shelving in the storage room.

Invest in packs of silica gel

If you opt to store your tools in drawers or a toolbox in order to keep them locked away for security reasons, you should invest in packs of silica gel. These work toward absorbing moisture that will be present in those drawers, hence, reducing the risk of rust developing. For good measure, you can use these in tandem with anti-rust liners, which are easily affixed to the sides of the drawers or the toolbox.
